A compilation of five short films, directed by emerging directors, each holds a unique and original voice. “on the thresholds”, the title for this year’s program, illustrates the topics and the dramatic tones that the five films carry. One film centers on an outsider longing to talk with her son, but for now she might compromise for some basic human connection, while in another film a mother wants to know more about her adolescent, but with closeness comes the pain of sobriety. Boundaries are transgressed between the world of the deceased and the (human) companions that were left behind in one film, while in another film the world of innocence is breached by a reminiscent from a different time and place, the kind of memory that leaves a scar. And another film ponders: how do we react when something unexpected happens and invading our life from the depths? The five films that compile Short Rides expose more than one side of their coins, more than one way to face a threshold.
